Bucegi Mountains Romania day hike – Moieciu de Sus, Bucsa Peak, Strungile Mari

Hike Romania is one of our soul projects in which we want to share with you our newly discovered passion for hiking. Today’s hike explores Bucegi mountains Romania starting from Moieciu de Sus and without further ado let’s get into it.

Trail: Moieciu de Sus (1230 m) – Abandoned HutBucsa Peak (1846 m) – Saua Strunga Hut – Abandoned Hut – Moieciu de Sus

Duration: 6h30 (without breaks)

Distance: 13km

Difficulty: easy-medium, with no technical or dangerous portions

Water source: only in Moieciu de Sus, you can buy water from the store. Be sure you bring enough water with you (I recommend you have at least 2 liters per person)

How to get to Moieciu de Sus: From Bucharest, using Waze or Google Maps you will get right at the starting point of the trail. Search for “Moieciu de Sus Valea Bangaleasa“. Once you are in Moieciu de Sus keep driving on Valea Bangaleasa Street till you reach the barrier marking the end of the car road. The condition of the access road is very good, suitable for any car.

The signs marking the trail are a bit confusing so keep in mind the following highlighted directions to make sure you don’t get lost.

Moeciu de Sus – Abandoned Hut: 20 min

From the car barrier, keep walking on the dirt road until you reach an old abandoned hut on the left. Ignore any red triangle signs you may see until this point. From the abandoned hut, the road splits in two and you must follow the path sliding right.

Abandoned Hut – Bucsa Peak: 2h10 min

Here comes the tiring, constant uphill hike through the forest that we all hate. Long and boring but very rewarding in the end once you get to see the view from the top. Keep an eye on the signs. Once you get out of the woods, leave the forest path, turn left and keep climbing up. Be very careful not to miss this spot because the sign is not easy to spot. Bucsa Peak is not marked with any sign, but you’ll know you got there when there will be no more climbing up.

Bucsa Peak- Saua Strunga Hut: 1h

From Bucsa Peak follow the red stripe sign to the big rock wall you see in the distance. This wall is called Strungile Mici (1988 m). Somewhere on this part of the trail, we stopped for a picnic because we loved the view and wanted to enjoy it for a while. After a well-deserved break, we continued the hike to Strungile Mici. After you cross the rock wall, keep going forward, even if you don’t see the red stripe sign at first. In 20 minutes you will reach Saua Strunga Hut. This is a common point for many other trails in the area and it’s quite a popular spot. Take a break to enjoy the beautiful nature surrounding you and when you are ready to leave follow the red crux sign.

Saua Strunga Hut – Abandoned Hut – Moieciu de Sus: 2h 20 min

From Saua Strunga Hut, following the red crux sign, you’ll walk by Strungile Mari (another big rock wall you’ll see on your right). At one point the trail turns left marking the start of the descend back to Moieciu de Sus. Follow the red crux sign through the forest to the Abandoned Hut you passed by on the way up. The descent is steep, but nothing to worry about.
